Foot and Mouth Disease

FMD i.e., Foot and Mouth Disease is observed in cloven hoofed animals like cow, buffalo, sheep, goats, pig, camel etc. The mortality rate of this disease is low but its morbidity rate is high.

FMD is a viral disease. Picornaviridae is the virus causing FMD. The virus has spread in seven different strains which are A, O, C, Asia, SAT1, SAT2 and SAT3. AOC variant is widely observed in South and North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. SAT1, SAT2 and SAT3 are observed majorly in African continent. Asia variant is observed prominently in Asian Continent.

Symptoms of FMD are High temperature, shivering body, reduced milk production, lesions in mouth and foot, oedema of mouth and tongue, animal stops eating due to mouth lesions. Lesions on udder are also observed in some animals.

FMD spreads through direct as well as indirect contact with the affected animals. It can spread from saliva, urine, feces, semen, milk, direct contact, particles released during exhalation also. In some cases, like moist air, the disease can spread up to 250 Km in 24 hours to 10 days of period. Vaccinated animals or those who are recovered from infection also act as a carrier for new infection.

Remedies:

Vaccination is the most important and effective way of controlling the FMD. Vaccines are available at minimum cost or free in some states in India. Vaccine is available at government facilities throughout India regularly. Getting the animals vaccinated reduces the risk of them getting effected.

Since it is a viral disease, symptomatic treatment can be given to reduce problems due to infection. Some wound cure medicines can be used to cure the lesions in foot and mouth.

LR Pharmaceuticals has its two products specially formulated for FMD.

FMD Powder: It is the product in powder form for the treatment of FMD mouth lesions. Mixing FMD Powder with some clean water and applying the paste directly on the wounds helps the animals recover and reduce the inflammation and pain from the lesions. FMD Powder is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiulcerative, sialagogue which improves the production and secretion of saliva. It is also styptic which stops the bleeding immediately.

Maggolar: It is also a product of LR Pharmaceuticals which is used on the foot lesions in animals during FMD. Maggolar is a wound healing spray which can be used in the treatment of foot lesions caused in FMD. It is also antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic and is very much effective on the maggoted wounds.
